My own children started doing basic chores around 5 or 6 years of age. I started them out with picking up there own toys, putting their clothes in the hamper, making their beds (which hardly ever got done), and if they could reach the sink, they could do the plastic cups and other stuff that couldn't break.
Now with my grandson (Trystin), he is 2years old and he puts his toys away (with some help from mommy, nona, aunt nini or grandpa). We play a game...
He has this big tub of mega blocks that are different colors, so we try to say each color and throw them in the tub. Its learning to pick up your toys and learning basic colors all in one. His trucks he loves to push and park them all the time anyway, so when its time for bed ... we just park them in an out of way spot (right now I'm using the bottom of my entertainment center). It is very crowded in my home right now, so thats a good a place than any.
I have also read (but hadn't tried this on my own) that putting a picture of the toy taped in the front of the bin its suppose to go in helps the child now exactly where each toy goes. It does sound like a good idea to me.
